Poem 7: Time

Frustration. Anger. Resentment. Anguish.
Angst. Pain. Torture. Fear. Loss.
How long until I finally get what I want?
How long until I finally finish school?
When will I ever learn to drive? Or get
A job? Get married?
Have kids?
A life of my own without the pressures of
Parental figures
Clawing up my back every minute of every day?
How long until they really TALK to each other
Instead of through me?
I want out of this town, but no one knows how I feel.

Book Review: FRACTURED by Elizabeth Stacey

Elizabeth Stacey
(The Broken Series #1)
Publication date: October 4th 2014
Genres: Adult, Contemporary

There are no superheroes to come save the day, no knight in shining armor. No, it’s just me living in this nightmare that will never end. No one will even notice I am gone. The only family I have is stuck here in this dark place with me and I refuse to let her future repeat my past. So it’s up to me now, I am the only one that can change her fate.

McKenna Brooks believed the past was behind her, until the day she woke up to find that she and her only friend have been kidnapped, and fighting to survive.
Dalton “The Detonator” Taylor is living the dream. His MMA title fight is just around the corner and life is good. That is until he finds out that his sister has gone missing and his life is turned upside down. Will Dalton be able to find her before it’s too late? And what will happen when he finds out his sister is not alone? Will he be able to make the sacrifices to save them both?
Can the deep connection of two people that never really knew each other save them both or will they be fractured beyond repair?

**This is not a love story, this is the tragedy that brought two people together.

There is no bigger word to explain how sad and heartbreaking this book was.

The novel stars McKenna Brooks and her best friend Amelia "Millie" Taylor, kidnapped, locked and heavily abused by Millie's explosive boyfriend Vince. McKenna has had a long history of dealing with abuse and neglect her whole life, so she knows how to act toward vicious beings such as Vince. But Vince isn't even half the issue when another mafia leader, Shaw, separates the girls and keeps McKenna for himself. The book's POV switches from McKenna's to Minnie's older MMA-fighting champion brother Dalton "The Detonator" Taylor. When he finds out that her little sister and her friend are missing and captured, he and his computer hacker friends Hunter and Becks do whatever it takes to bring the girls home, although they have a huge payment to the head of the mafia, Mr. Black.

It took me awhile to finish the novel (this review was supposed to go up last Tuesday, Feb. 10) because of the very slow pacing. When the POV went to McKenna, I felt as though every second was spent on McKenna's thoughts and feelings on being used for her body. Her mind sometimes flashed back to her sister and mother, who died when she was young. McKenna made a promise to her sister to basically live a normal life away from sex, drugs, and the foster care system they were both in. It seemed like time slowed down and McKenna never backed down against Shaw and Vince's evil hands.

Even though Millie was obviously the latter of the two girls, based on strength, she was still loyal to her best friend. She even laid out hidden messages throughout pages of their favorite book-turned-movie to try to find her.

Dalton's perspective bothered me sometimes because even though he was so desperate to find and rescue his sister, the huge amounts of cursing and throwing punches at the wrong people got in the way of the mission. I knew he had anger issues but the book never really explained why he was so angry, beyond finding his sister. What was the main reason of his major anger issues? I hope to know in RESTORATION, the next book.

All in all, this novel was very good and I can't wait for book #2!

We pull into the train station and step out of the car. Father takes my luggage. We walk to platform two. The cold bites down into the space between the collar of my coat and my neck, and I pull it around me tighter. Underneath my coat the weight of the Arthur’s Round badge over my chest reminds me where I’m going. A few days ago, a package from Camelot arrived. Along with a giant stack of contracts to sign, it contained several sets of the wardrobe I must wear every day: charcoal blazer, skirt, a dark red tie—the official Pendragon color—and a circular, golden brooch. The sun bounced off the edges of the brooch. The letter A in the center shone, and around the A were little designs of ivy and flowers. Last night, I held it in my hand until I went to bed and couldn’t stop staring at it. Every time I got my fingerprint on the surface, I would take it to the sink to wash it and make the badge sparkle like new again.
I’m really, really going to Camelot.
I take a breath and shiver. “I still can’t believe they picked me.”
Father, who is turned away from me, looks down the track, waiting for the train to come. “Maybe they can’t deny talent. At the end of the day, Camelot wants powerful people to join their forces. In their minds, it’s better you work for them than…” He trails off.
All that matters to me is that Camelot saw my potential. I smile as fire energy rushes through my veins. I take my hands out of my pockets and cup them both together. A glow appears between the spaces of my fingers—a small fire. Warmth spreads through my cold skin, slowly making its way into my freezing bones.
Next to me, a kid is holding on to his mother’s hand. He points at me and whispers to his mother, “Look, Mother. That girl is a fire user.” The mom ignores him.

Tour Spot, Book Review + Giveaway: SING FOR ME by Gracie Madison

Click for larger images

(Kindle Paperwhite. US & Canada.)

Madeline Noel fled war-torn Heaven to hide within the mortal world, but the blessing that could protect her from evil is the holy realm's forbidden power.

As a talented soprano for the Eden Theatre Company, Madeline hides among prima donnas and tone-deaf flutists. Her perfect voice may entertain audiences, but a careless laugh may shatter glass, and her greatest scream can kill. To control her unrestrained voice, the angels forbid Madeline from embracing the emotions that strengthen her song. Anger. Fear.

The demon-hunter Damascus vows to defend Madeline from Hell’s relentless evil, but he cannot protect her from her own feelings. Though they deny their dangerous attraction, her guardian becomes her greatest temptation.

Surrendering to desire may awaken the gift suppressed within Madeline’s soul, and neither Heaven nor Hell will allow such absolute power to exist.

About the Author:

Gracie Madison would spend every day, all day writing…if it were socially acceptable.  Ever since she was a little girl scribbling with a crayon, Gracie’s dedicated herself to her books and all the supernatural and paranormal, creepy and beautiful stories and characters born within the pages. Now Gracie is committed to finally sharing those books with the world.  When the laptop is pried from her hands, Gracie is probably working her day job, rooting on the Steelers, or out with her husband searching for Pittsburgh’s best sushi.

This book is such a whirlwind!
I went from loving this novel, to hating it, to throwing it across my floor, back to feeling content with it. In general, I guess I can say I had a good time reading.

I love a good novel that centers around angels vs. demons; good vs. evil; Heaven and Hell. It's why I'm gravitated towards literatures such as The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, and J.M. Darhower's Extinguish. So when YA Bound Book Tours announced a tour for Gracie Madison's Sing for Me, I knew I had to sign up and keep reading.

The novel starts with Madeline who has flown from the Realm to the mortal world in hiding from Corinth, a demon who is out to destroy her. Madeline is a Choir, an angel created merely to entertain the Realm. Choirs aren't given the power to use emotions, or allowed to interact with each other and never realize their true potential of their powers. With her guardian, Hunter Damascus, and his friends Shiloh and Tyre, and her mortal-turned-Prophet friend Natalie, they work together to outrun Corinth and his plan to capture and kill Madeline. All the while, Natalie and Madeline are planning the production of a famous play for the Eden Theater Company with prima donna, Danielle.

But the forbidden love and unbreakable bond between Madeline and Damascus distracts them from their task, even though they know they are in love and want to be together. That was one of the main struggles I had with this book-- if Heaven was to be this amazing, glorious, magical place, why create a Realm that prevents two people who want to be together? Even when Damascus and Madeline save each other and have sex for the first time, all Damascus could focus on was protecting her and making sure the Thrones (their judges and lawmakers) didn't catch them and renounce Madeline as Choir. It was torturous to see two people who cared and loved each other so deeply be pulled apart by some stupid, archaic law.

Gracie Madison's writing style is very poetic and flowing. Each sentence carves into one another and fit, like a professional Olympic ice skater flying on the surface. Her style reminds me of Cassandra Clare, and her written choreography.

Go read this book. You won't be sorry! The second book, Divine Interlude, is due out in Spring 2015, and I'll be waiting at the gates for that one.
